Hi friends,
Recently when i was browsing through TV channels, i saw an ad for a debate show "Globalization - A boon or curse" as topic. Unfortunately i couldn't able to see the program.. Hence, i m posting my views on that..
What is Globalization?
Globalization means opening up the market so that products from any country can be imported and the products from our country can be exported to any country in the world. That means Multinational companies can manufacture products across many countries and sell to consumers across the globe. Money, technology and raw materials have broken the International barriers.
Lets see the both sides of Globalization.
The positive effects of Globalization:
1) The growth of various sectors especially IT sector has opened up new employment opportunities. The nation's major threat " Unemployment problem " was controlled by this. The average earning of the people has gone up. The economic changes initiated have had a dramatic effect on the overall growth of the economy.
2) The increased competition for marketing the product resulted in the price reduction which benefits the consumer. I still remember when i was studying class XI, my class teacher got a wrong call in his mobile phone and he cursed the caller for the same because he has to pay Rs.7/min for an incoming call and
15/min for an outgoing call. But Wat's the scenario today?? The call rates have dropped to 10 paise/min and some operators are paying you if you receive a call. Such a drastic change happened in just 3 yrs span.
3)The most important effect is on the educational and medical facilities. Students can travel to different country to study in the world's best institutions. Similarly in the field of medicine. The patients can go anywhere in the world for their treatment where they believe they can get best treatment at the affordable cost.
The adverse effects of Globalization:
1) In 1940, as a part of Independence struggle, Mahatma Gandhi started Swadeshi Movement for boycotting foreign products (especially Britain's). He believed that Indians are capable of manufacturing all products. But what happened now? We opened the market allowing the foreign products to compete with our Indian made products. The craze for our people on foreign products (even though inferior than our products) resulted in the subsequent reduction in the turnover of Indian companies particularly for small scale industries. This resulted in the unemployment of the middle aged people who were working in those companies. I remember when i was kid, i used to have panner soda, Toronto and gold spot. But today i cant find those drinks as either the industries got crushed or the local industries are being taken over by foreign multinationals. As a result, the richer getting richer while the poor getting poorer.
2) Not only in the economy, the health of our people also gets affected. Fast foods like McDonald's and KFC are spreading in our country and making our people to have more of junk foods than healthy foods. The increasing ratio of shop selling cool drinks to the shop selling fresh juices in our metro cities is a good example for this.
3) Coming to our culture, with increasing cost of living in the cities, the youth of modern age tend to have a nuclear family than a joint family. They are not even willing to have their parents with them as they feel them as their burden. Just think about the kid in a family where both the parents are in a job. When the kid actually needs care and attention, their parents are not able to give it to them. One more point i want to insist here. With the increased competition, kids are forced to go to special classes / tuition in the evening which is meant for them to play. Even if they have some free time, the computer video games takes it away. As a result, they lag from having physical exercises. Is it good for their future?
4) Finally with an increase in the cost of living in the cities, people tend to move away from the city. The agricultural lands are turning into plots and apartments. This is evident in the increased price of our essential commodities.
Friends these are just my views on globalization. Its high time for us to choose and act wisely so that we can rise all together to make India a superpower by 2020.
Globalization can be made profitable for a country by making appropriate regulations.
ReplyDelete1. Tax H1B visa holders. Promote indigenous talent. (Courtesy USA)
2. Employ the citizens 1st & then when there s a dearth of respective skills get a non-citizen. Enforce local employment.(Courtesy EU)
3. Working 40 hrs/week. Accumulation of 4 hrs/week mandating half a day leave next week. Maintain work-life balance. (Courtesy Germany)
4. Control your economy so that products are cheaper & ur ppl get to make stuff for every household. Control the uncontrollable, do the impossible;) (Courtesy China)
5. Provide a major cut of retail market profit to the manufacturer (farmer not the grocer, pharmaceuticals not the pharmacy, etc). Distributing the middlemen' (dealers') profits. Encouraging manufacturer (Courtesy me;))
6. Cool Advertisements. Building brand names. Putting up a front.(AAB, TATA etc). (Courtesy me again!!)
thambi...engirunthu sutta...
ReplyDelete1. antha drink toronto or bovonto??
2. which foreigner is working in india..how we are gonna tax the visa holders...clarify..
3. stop eating pizza's and stop goin to MNC shops...eat suttikanchi...
4. In education and medical field ppl were goin and coming in and out of country for long time...
5. Globalisation has actually opened up lot of opportunity for small industries and for godsake look at the number of small companies which has cropped up in last 10 years..we almost export everything..on the otherhand,we do import a lot but indian industries i dont think has been affected in any way. India didnt even had recession.
@RT
ReplyDelete1. That must be torino, bovonto.. (toronto must the combo ;) )
2. H1B visa tax works for USA (Country-specific).. The point being promoting local talent instead of depending on foreigners.. India has the best of both worlds.. Foreign exchange from H1B visa holders (money, they bring back to India), jobs created by both local industries & MNCs.. We are not losing the jobs or the money!! I guess u really dont want to see foreign models acting in our films ;) (Just kidding!!)
3. Eating suttakanji?!?! Even I or U wont dare to do tat.. Still on the outset, lets try our own style of pizza (but domino's, pizza hut, kfc, mcdonald have already adapted to indian flavors (u dont get them outside india!!)), chicken etc.. Making a new brand (very difficult) goes a long way..
4. Knowledge is one thing where there is no loss.. But any country has to provide more suitable jobs for talented people to tap their potential for its own growth..
5. As long as we dont ride in a "bubble" (ie as long as we do real work), there is no chance of recession here..
Ippo enna solla vara...there ll be domino's and Mcdonalds but it has to be indianised..wht crap...
ReplyDeleteH1B visa can work for US...How many Expats work here may be a thousand or ten thousand max. whereas see the number of ppl outside india...its all probably due to opening up of market...and abt the recession, thts wht am trying to say..whether globalisation is there are not as long as U do real work there will be no recession...enjoy wht U got out of globalisation (cheap call rates, etc.) and accept its negatives as anything always comes with a price...
Mokkai ya iruku :(
