Globalization:A boon or curse - My view

Hi friends,

Recently when i was browsing through TV channels, i saw an ad for a debate show "Globalization - A boon or curse" as topic. Unfortunately i couldn't able to see the program.. Hence, i m posting my views on that..

What is Globalization?

Globalization means opening up the market so that products from any country can be imported and the products from our country can be exported to any country in the world. That means Multinational companies can manufacture products across many countries and sell to consumers across the globe. Money, technology and raw materials have broken the International barriers.

Lets see the both sides of Globalization.

The positive effects of Globalization:

1) The growth of various sectors especially IT sector has opened up new employment opportunities. The   nation's major threat " Unemployment problem " was controlled by this. The average earning of the people has gone up. The economic changes initiated have had a dramatic effect on the overall growth of the economy.

2) The increased competition for marketing the product resulted in the price reduction which benefits the consumer. I still remember when i was studying class XI, my class teacher got a wrong call in his mobile phone and he cursed the caller for the same because he has to pay Rs.7/min for an incoming call and
15/min for an outgoing call. But Wat's the scenario today?? The call rates have dropped to 10 paise/min and some operators are paying you if you receive a call. Such a drastic change happened in just 3 yrs span.

3)The most important effect is on the educational and medical facilities. Students can travel to different country to study in the world's best institutions. Similarly in the field of medicine. The patients can go anywhere in the world for their treatment where they believe they can get best treatment at the affordable cost.

The adverse effects of Globalization:

1) In 1940, as a part of Independence struggle, Mahatma Gandhi started Swadeshi Movement for boycotting foreign products (especially Britain's). He believed that Indians are capable of manufacturing all products. But what happened now? We opened the market allowing the foreign products to compete with our Indian made products. The craze for our people on foreign products (even though inferior than our products) resulted in the subsequent reduction in the turnover of Indian companies particularly for small scale industries. This resulted in the unemployment of the middle aged people who were working in those companies. I remember when i was kid, i used to have panner soda, Toronto and gold spot. But today i cant find those drinks as either the industries got crushed or the local industries are being taken over by foreign multinationals. As a result, the richer getting richer while the poor getting poorer.

2) Not only in the economy, the health of our people also gets affected. Fast foods like McDonald's and KFC are spreading in our country and making our people to have more of junk foods than healthy foods. The increasing ratio of shop selling cool drinks to the shop selling fresh juices in our metro cities is a good example for this.

3) Coming to our culture, with increasing cost of living in the cities, the youth of modern age tend to have a nuclear family than a joint family. They are not even willing to have their parents with them as they feel them as their burden. Just think about the kid in a family where both the parents are in a job. When the kid actually needs care and attention, their parents are not able to give it to them. One more point i want to insist here. With the increased competition, kids are forced to go to special classes / tuition in the evening which is meant for them to play. Even if they have some free time, the computer video games takes it away. As a result, they lag from having physical exercises. Is it good for their future?

4) Finally with an increase in the cost of living in the cities, people tend to move away from the city. The agricultural lands are turning into plots and apartments. This is evident in the increased price of our essential commodities.

Friends these are just my views on globalization. Its high time for us to choose and act wisely so that we can rise all together to make India a superpower by 2020.

My 24th Birthday

Hi Friends,

This is my first blog and hope u wont criticize me much after reading this..

To start of with, let me share how i spent my birthday this year..

July 23, 2010 - 16:18 hrs.

The company siren cried calling the end of the day's work. I was pretty much delighted rite from the beginning of the day since it is a Friday. As the time melted away, i was getting more and more delighted as the end of the dawn brings me my 24th birthday. After getting a few household things (which i promised my mom to bring home at least by this time) i went to a nearby hotel to finish of my dinner with my room mates.

After finishing my dinner, i left to Egmore railway station. I enjoyed my ride with my favourite songs being played at my ears and with the chill air which gained more and more momentum as my bike started gaining its speed. On reaching egmore, I marched towards my compartment. After confirming my berth in the passengers list, i got settled. I don't know why this always happens to me. The compartment in which i travel will always be gents special.. In the past three years, i made more than 75 journeys up and down to trichy. 90% of my journey will be like this only... In the remaining 10% the girl in my bay will either be married or will be travelling with her boyfriend.. [Naanum ovoru tripum vaaranam aaiyram mathiri irukkum nu ninachi ninachi yemanthu porathu valakkam aaiduchu... ]

After my ticket checking, i slept by 23:00 hrs.. Exactly at 00:00 hrs on July 24, i felt some one tapping at my legs... Sub-consciously i opened my eyes and there stood my first surprise.. Yeah my sister cum my best friend Anitha stood in front of me with the bday cake.. For a fraction of second i wondered whether i m in dream world r in real world, but i realised it was happening rite there.. After cutting the cake, Anitha gave me my bday present. I decided to open the gift in the morning and asked Anitha to go to her compartment. I thought of sleeping once my mob stops ringing with the calls from my friends, but the thought of bday gift didn't allow me to sleep. The curiosity on seeing the gift kept on rising and couldn't resist it. I opened it. It was a nice gift from Anitha and my best buddy Vivek.

I went to anitha's compartment where there was another surprise waiting for me.. The Airtel Super Singer-3 audition team was travelling in her compartment as the have the auditions at trichy. Singer Mahathi, Host Divya was there in that compartment. After a small chat, I came back to my compartment around 2 am and slept. The whole day, i got drenched in the rain of bday wishes.. I think it was the day my mobile received the maximum no. of calls and msges. I felt so proud and happy that i have got a lot of friends and i thank u guys for the same..

Added to this surprise list, my aunt came to my home and wished me. We all went to Vayaloor temple in the eve to get blessings from the Lord Muruga (My fav temple in trichy). The day finally came to an end with an outing with my friends and with the bday treat. But my bday celebration didn't ended with this. On Monday, i celebrated it again with my room mates. To conclude, this bday is the best bday i ever celebrated so far..

I thank you all friends for making it so special to me..
